The hot new trend? A non-surgical facelift with no downtime

This time of year, the phones at plastic surgeon Jon Turk’s Upper East Side office are ringing off the hook as men and women across the United States call asking for a “freshening up” before the holidays. But unlike years past, they are not calling to set up an appointment or pre-op consultation. The calls are for Turk’s new, non-invasive, non-surgical facial procedure.

Instead of spending $50,000 for a lower ponytail facelift like Karen Millen did, or up to $250,000 for a full facelift like some male stars have, people are opting for a gentler procedure , less expensive and not permanent.

The benefits are immediate, there’s no downtime (compared to weeks of recovery with surgery), and Turk’s technique doesn’t break the bank.

“It’s great—we can now mimic the traditional facelift without surgery,” Turk said. “It’s a way to manipulate the facial muscles and skin to create a lift of the upper face and a softening of the lower face and neck. This is especially good for someone who is too young for a traditional facelift but notices that their face is sagging. For someone in their late 30s or 40s, we can literally stop facial aging in its tracks as this procedure also keeps aging skin from sagging.”

The procedure starts with Botox, but unlike traditional Botox which lifts the muscles, properly placed they can actually lift the muscles.

“I mainly focus on the mouth, jaw and neck,” Turk said. “It’s a series of Botox injections along the jawline in the neck and injections that (turn the brow upside down), lift the mouth by being able to use the Botox to give instructions to the muscles and the face.”

The next step is the surgical threads that Turk implants along the cheeks and jawline, not only do they give an immediate lift, but when the threads dissolve in six to 12 months, they create collagen.

“Facelifts will tighten the skin, but they won’t tighten the skin,” said Turk. “By producing collagen, it also tightens the skin and gives it a more youthful, less wrinkled appearance.”

The third step is several treatments with the Morpheus treatment which is described by the Plastic Surgery Center of New Orleans as: “radiofrequency energy is emitted into the underlying skin while microneedling occurs on the surface, combining the effects of the two technologies. Morpheus stimulates collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in the middle and lower layers of the skin – proteins and compounds that help make the surface skin look young and fresh.”

And, thanks to Lidocaine, the whole procedure is painless and takes about an hour.

In June I managed to make an appointment with Turki and the result was immediate and magical. I even posted an hour after the procedure on Instagram and walked out that evening none the wiser at the dinner table – except for all the “you look amazing!” comments. “How are you not getting old?” or “OK, what’s going on. Did you sell your soul to the devil?”

“It’s great for people who don’t want to go under anesthesia or have surgery,” Turk said.

And while Turk still performs surgeries, he predicts they will be fewer in the future.

“We’re in an era where there’s so much innovation and new technology that I think we’re going to go away and see fewer and fewer surgical procedures in the next 20 years.”
